Science as Art

To most, the sciences and the arts are two subjects that could not be more different. However, the wisest among us know that science is as much of an art as art is a science. Success calls for a careful technique, inquisitive inspiration, scrutizing critques, and most of all an undying work ethic. Even more concrete, visualization methods serve as an important tool in materials science for the analysis and presentation of scientific work. Sometimes even masterful images can convey information and ideas in ways that trancend those of mere data tables or equations. Occasionally, scientific images transcend their role as a medium for transmitting information and contain the aesthetic qualities that transform them into object of beauty and art.

The "Science as Art" competition pays homage to the hidden symbiotic relationship between the arts and sciences. Competitions are hosted by organizations such as Argonne National Lab and the Materials Research Society. The pieces below represent some of our entries from past "Science as Art" competitions.
