LaPorte County Lakes and Wetlands
The Lake Michigan shoreline is a major asset in LaPorte County. Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake that lies entirely within the U.S., with a length of 307 miles and breadth of 118 miles. With an average natural depth of 279 ft., it holds 22% of the total volume of the Great Lakes.

There are nine other lakes in LaPorte County of 50 acres or more, plus many smaller lakes and wetlands. Rivers and lakes cover 2,269 acres or 0.6% of the county, while wetlands cover 25,383 acres or 6.5% of the county. A permit must be obtained from the Army Corps of Engineers before draining or filling any wetlands. Contact the Natural Resources Conservation Service for more information.
