A Collection of Engineering Students' Narratives

Engineering has a tough, competitive culture that emphasizes the academic struggle and portrays itself as being for “anyone but not everyone“. This has impacts on students’ wellbeing and success, and limits the ecosystem of knowledge and ideas that makes up engineering (aka ‘latent diversity’).

We put this site together to share our quantitative and qualitative research with engineering students. Check out the video to the right for more information about the project, or scroll down to get your hands on our students’ narratives and our findings!

Engineering students have a lot going on, and it can sometimes feel overwhelming. We believe this page can help you learn how other engineering students have navigated their time in college, so you can learn what worked well for them (and what didn’t).

For many of us, it’s been a long time since we were engineering students, and our own experiences may not be reflective of what current students are going through. The STRIDE Research Group believes this website can be a valuable resource for faculty to gain insight into what it’s like to be an engineering student today.

Read Their Stories

We’ve included a lot of information that might be interesting or useful to faculty or students about students’ pathways and experiences of inclusion or exclusion in engineering. We recommend starting on our pages specifically for faculty or students (whichever one applies to you!). If you want to dive in, check the links below to start reading a few of our students stories, or head over to the Story Collection.
