Intelligent Control of Grinding Processes

The objective of this project is to develop and implement an intelligent control system for various precision grinding processes, which can autonomously learn the process and provide adequate control actions.  Both the supervisory and real time on-line control schemes are being developed.

Development of an intelligent control scheme

The intelligent control scheme utilizes a fuzzy optimization engine along with neuro-fuzzy networks to model complex grinding processes.   The control scheme is supervisory in nature and hence can be implemented over internet as shown in figure.

  Multi-level fuzzy controller

In this multi-level fuzzy controller, an adaptive fuzzy controller is designed to tune the parameters of the first layer fuzzy controller according to the system performance.  It has the ability to adaptively compensate for the effects of time-varying parameters.

Results of the intelligent control scheme

The following result shows the implementation results of applying the intelligent control scheme to force control of a surface grinding process.  The adaptive control scheme shows the ability to maintain a constant level of grinding force with depth of cut variations and a reduction of cycle time as a result.
