Cedar Grove Bridge - Franklin County
On Wednesday, February 17, 2016, the Cedar Grove Bridge came strategically crashing down into Franklin County's Whitewater River.
In 1999, the bridge was declared unsafe and closed for all vehicular and pedestrian traffic. After standing for almost 102 years, the bridge posed a significant risk to the public and approval was obtained to remove the structure. Although many different options were considered for removing the bridge, the safest, quickest and least expensive alternative was a controlled demolition.
Purdue’s JTRP graduate students Wayne Bunnell and Drake Krohn were onsite to witness the demolition. They installed camera equipment to capture the demolition from multiple angles, as well as the removal of debris over the following days.
