RoKit smart is a great introduction to both robotics and programming. The kit includes structural pieces to make up the body of each robot, and an Arduino Microcontroller, which controls the movements and actions of the robot as defined by whatever code is loaded onto it. The creator’s website,, includes programming lessons and instructions for building 11 robots and uploading the code necessary to run them onto the Arduino board. The programming lessons are well-written, but may be most appropriate for kids who already have some familiarity with programming. Uploading code to the Arduino board is a complicated and tedious process the first time, and the instructions on must be followed precisely or the upload will fail. After the initial setup, however, uploading code to the Arduino board is a fairly simple task. During play with RoKit Smart, kids will passively learn spatial reasoning skills and simple manufacturing by constructing the 11 robots provided on or by constructing their own designs. They will also improve their programming skills by viewing the code for the 11 robot designs, modifying the code for those designs, and programming the instructions for their own robots. Additionally, kids can learn design thinking and further programming by creating their own designs and by doing the “sumo competition” design challenge on the Robolink website. This challenge encourages kids to practice their design skills by placing them in a  typical engineering scenario, where their designs are constrained by the rules of the competition. Overall, Rokit Smart is a very good introduction to engineering and design thinking.

      • “Rokit-Smart features 2-in-1 designs (that can be found online) - these designs teach programming and design as well as problem solving and creative thinking. Kids can build robots and program them to do almost anything with this kit.”

      • "Rokit-Smart is a very good starter robotics set and is a decent instruction to coding. The included coding lessons are pretty good, but might be difficult for total beginners to grasp. The real value of this kit, however, is the fact that it gives a versatile set of basic parts which can easily be adapted to a large variety of simple robot designs.  There are instructions given for building 11 robots, but driven kids could easily adapt the kit to a vast set of their own designs. The biggest limitation is that the kit only includes 2 servos.
