Smart Car 5x5 is a unique puzzle game that provides multiple levels of increasing difficulty. The goal of the game is to fit 5 uniquely shaped colorful pieces onto the top of a car body platform, such that the colors of the pieces match the puzzle manual.  In the easy levels, the manual shows children the colors of all the pieces to guide them in correctly placing them on the car base. As the level difficulty progresses, less of the colors and pieces are shown in the guide, requiring children to think critically in order to solve the levels. As the child chooses where to put a piece to try and solve the puzzle, they must think of how the piece satisfies the conditions of the puzzle, and what would be the most creative, yet accurate, way to place the pieces together. With a strong emphasis on spatial reasoning and creative thinking through the manipulation of the blocks, this puzzle game promotes the development of skills needed for engineering thinking and design in young children.

Engineering thinking and design practices the gift encourages children to do or learn about:

Define a problem, try the solution, analyze the solution, plan the solution, redesign the solution, test the solution, recognize patterns

Engineering text or context explicitly provided by the gift: A problem, constraints, criteria

Additional practices and skills needed by engineers that were addressed by the gift:

Spatial reasoning, critical thinking, creative thinking, design, evidence-based reasoning, problem solving
