Dear MSE Students, Faculty, and Staff,

Copied below are the current safety training requirements for individuals affiliated with MSE. For students and technical personnel, the training modules and documentation records are now maintained through the MSE Lab Safety Blackboard course. Many of you have already been enrolled in this course (it should be listed on your Blackboard Dashboard). Annual Requirements for Administrative Staff
Each calendar year, administrative staff are required to complete the "awareness" HazCom training, which consists of an online, 15-minute module. On-Boarding Requirements for Students and Technical Personnel
Within 1 month of their appointment, all NEW faculty, technical staff, undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and other research-active personnel (including long-term visitors, summer REUs, lab course teaching assistants), are required to complete the following three training modules:

  1.  "Comprehensive" HazCom training
  2.  Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) training on "Lab Safety Fundamentals"
  3.  MSE-specific safety training (slides & quiz)

These training modules must be completed before requesting lab access and before working independently within an MSE-managed research or teaching lab space, including spaces in ARMS and MSEE as well as select labs in FLEX and Kepner.

Annual Requirements for Students and Technical Personnel
Each calendar year, all faculty, technical staff, undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and other research-active personnel are required to attend ONE in-person safety "refresher" training. Options for this refresher training include the following:

  *   MSE 690 or MSE 390 safety seminar, led by MSE Safety Officer (next session is on Sept 13th, ARMS 1010 at 3:45 pm; all are welcome)
  *   MSE 430 (Senior Design) safety seminar, led by MSE Safety Officer (typically 1 per year)
  *   Research-specific safety meeting**, led by an MSE faculty member (recurring)
Additionally, each calendar year, all undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers are required to complete the MSE-specific safety training (slides & quiz) administered through the MSE Lab Safety Blackboard course.

**Note that the research-specific safety meetings are required to address eight ppt slides provided by the MSE Safety Officer, which include guidance on how to document the training within MSE records. The meeting can then discuss policies and issues of relevance to the specific group of people. Interested faculty members should contact Prof. Erk for more details.
