Bolivian Culture Spotlight

The Noel Kempff Mercado National Park is located in the northeast section of the Santa Cruz department of Bolivia bordering the country of Brazil. In 1988, the Bolivian government declared a 250 square miles section of undisturbed land as the national park. It is named in honor of a conservation biologist Noel Kempff Mercado who recognized the global significance of the area enough to propose a campaign to preserve it. The United Nations later designated the national park a World Heritage Site.

Today, the park covers over 6,000 square miles and is one of the largest, most intact parks in the Amazon Basin. Noel Kempff is home to 139 different mammal species, 74 reptile species, 62 amphibian species, 254 fish species, and over 4,000 different plant species.

With an abundance of trees in the area, the park became the site of controversial deforestation and logging operations. In 1996, the Noel Kempff Climate Action project was started to terminate logging rights in the area. The group also closely monitors socioeconomics impacts, number of tress in Noel Kempff Mercado, and the rate of deforestation. Overall, the project has avoided 1,034,107 tons of CO2 emissions, which would have been caused by logging and deforestation between 1997 and 2005.
