Abstract:

Variability in stress measurements within granular materials is influenced by the characteristics of particles in contact with the sensor. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of particle size distribution on the variability of stress measurement within a particulate medium. To achieve this, a force sensing resistor was embedded in a model ground composed of laboratory-prepared sand samples, and repeated stress measurements were conducted. The results reveal that sensors larger than the particle diameter facilitate reproducible earth pressure measurements. Furthermore, a broader particle size distribution enhances measurement reproducibility, although variability increases when the size difference between large and small particles becomes significant.




Bio

Dr. Sang Inn Woo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Incheon National University, South Korea. In 2015, He earned his Ph.D. supervised by Prof. Salgado from Purdue University, specializing in the numerical simulation of penetration in sand.

Dr. Woo’s research focuses on soil constitutive modeling, large deformation numerical analysis using MPM, geotechnical model tests and applications of cutting-edge sensors in geotechnical projects. Currently he is working on multiple research projects: 1) stress measurement within sandy ground, 2) geotechnical centrifuge tests for consolidation and creep settlement of soft clay, and 3) digitalization of construction protocols for automated verification of geotechnical design.
