Hello Civil and Construction Engineering Faculty members,

We've received the request to submit nominations for the Bilsland Dissertation Fellowship to the College.  The deadline for submitting nominations to CCE graduate office is 8:00 am on Monday, December 2, 2024. The CCE graduate committee will rank the nominations based on merit (academic record, publications and presentation of research, GPA), evidence of contributions (being a good citizen) to the school and college, career promise (leadership, innovation, readiness, and potential to make an impact) and the need for support to complete the degree.  Our top ranked nominations will be sent on to the College for consideration - CCE has been allocated two Bilsland Fellowships.

The intent of the fellowship is to provide support for outstanding PhD candidates in their final year of doctoral degree completion.  The Bilsland Dissertation Fellowship will be administered as an assistantship; and no additional work appointments may be added. The 2025 Bilsland Fellowship includes $30,000 annual salary, tuition remission, medical insurance premium contribution, and coverage of most fees. Engineering differential fee is not covered. Advisors may choose to cover this from their discretionary account. The Bilsland allocation may be used Summer 2025, Fall 2025, Spring 2026, or Summer 2026. As this is a dissertation award - the student is expected to graduate at the conclusion of the fellowship period.  Receipt of the Bilsland Dissertation Fellowship would make the student ineligible for future School level funding (those opportunities coordinated through the CCE Grad Office).  If unexpected circumstances extend the students program, it would be the expectation that the advisor would provide any future funding through an RA or TA.  If Bilsland Fellows do not graduate as expected, this could hurt our future allocations from the College, so please only nominate students you truly expect to graduate.

Criteria:
- nominees must be in their final year of the program and
- have completed or are scheduled to complete their preliminary exam by May 1, 2025
- students cannot register as Degree Only or Exam Only while holding the Bilsland Dissertation Fellowship
- students who will complete their defense prior to September 1, 2025, are not eligible for this Fellowship
- students who need less than one semester of support are not eligible

 Nomination materials  (please submit them in this order as one pdf):
1. A letter from the major professor (limit two pages) stating at minimum the following:
                a.  Why the student is deserving of the award
                b.  Assurance of completion of the degree in no more than 12 months and no less than 6 months.
                c.  Need for support to complete the degree.
2. Dissertation abstract
3. Applicant's resume containing the selection criteria (i.e. academic record, publications and presentation of research, evidence of contributions to the school and college, etc)
4. Applicant's graduate level transcripts

We will accept one nomination per faculty member. Please note that if your nominee is selected, we will need to know the award period (any three consecutive semesters between summer 2025 and summer 2026), so please be prepared with that information as well.
