Subject: Updated Analysis of the National Science Foundation FY 2019 Budget Request

Good evening,

Please find attached an updated National Science Foundation (NSF) section of Lewis-Burke’s Analysis of the FY 2019 Budget Request for Federal Research, Health, and Higher Education Programs. This update reflects full NSF FY 2019 budget request details, which were released on February 28. NSF would be provided with $7.472 billion in funding, essentially flat with FY 2017 levels. The budget request would prioritize the ten Big Ideas for Future Investment, devoting $342 million in new funding across all ten Big Ideas, while individual research divisions would see cuts ranging from 1 to 11 percent. Big Ideas funding would be available to support research, education, and infrastructure across all NSF-supported disciplines. The attached analysis contains information on Big Ideas plans and other proposed signature investments, as well as proposed reductions, including to several Obama-era initiatives that were already slated to wind down, Graduate Research Fellowships, CAREER awards, and several education programs.

Best,
Paula
