Introduction to XPS and Introduction to CasaXPS

Dear Colleagues,
Two XPS related workshops will be held March, 2018. It is a good practice to have at least one trained student in each research group using or planning to use Surface Analysis Characterization tools.

1) Introduction to XPS workshop - What you should know about X-ray pohotoelectron spectroscopy (http://bit.ly/1eqIM8U), March 19-20, 2018 @ 9:00 AM - BRK 1001.

Course Description: XPS is widely used to determine the chemical composition of a surface (element concentrations, chemical states, lateral and depth distributions, etc.). Nowadays XPS has become a standard technique for the characterization of solid surfaces. The course will teach how and what information can be provided by XPS. The quantification of the XPS data will be discussed in detail (thickness calculation, coverage, atomic percentage, etc.)

Instructor: Dmitry Zemlyanov, PhD, Senior Surface Science Application Scientist, Birck Nanotechnology Center, Purdue University

2) XPS Lite Workshop Introduction to CasaXPS (http://bit.ly/IYeOeu), March 26-27, 2018 @ 9:00 AM - BRK 1001.

Course Description: XPS is widely used to determine the chemical composition of a surface (element concentrations, chemical states, lateral and depth distributions, etc.). Nowadays XPS has become a standard technique for the characterization of solid surfaces. However, XPS data require thorough analysis using a dedicated software. Purdue University has a site license for CasaXPS allowing to perform a complete analysis of XPS data. The course aims to teach (1) what analysis should be applied to raw XPS data and (2) how this can be done using CasaXPS. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of XPS data using CasaXPS will be discussed in detail as well. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops to follow data analysis using CasaXPS.

Instructor: Dmitry Zemlyanov, PhD, Senior Surface Science Application Scientist, Birck Nanotechnology Center, Purdue University (dzemlian at purdue.edu<mailto:dzemlian at purdue.edu>)

Birck Discipline Policy Changes

Dear Birck community,

I would like to alert you to a new procedure for Birck discipline, attached below. This document clearly outlines the process for addressing unsafe or negligent behavior in the labs and cleanroom, and gives everyone an idea of repercussions for such behavior. Our primary goal in Birck is to provide all users with state-of-the-art facilities for micro/nanofabrication and characterization. Of course, we can only do that with the help and cooperation of its users. Fewer infractions and more careful and organized user culture will lead directly to more successful processing for everyone, reduced tool downtime, and more time for our hard-working staff to work with users to develop and characterize processes, exchange ideas, and install new tools for increased capability in Birck. We hope that clearly delineated discipline procedures will help educate users, and train them to be world-class researches in micro/nanoscale science and technology.

Please read through this document, put together after much consideration by the Disciplinary Committee headed by Prof. Amy Marconnet. It will be posted on the Birck wiki shortly, and is effective immediately.

Thank you to everyone for helping to make Birck such a creative, collaborative place. I hope we can all work to make it even more competitive and productive.

Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering
Associate Director of Operations, Birck Nanotechnology Center, Discovery Park
