The BNC Monday Memo]   BNC News *week of January 11, 2010* ANNOUNCEMENTS

*UNIVERSITY HOLIDAY: *Monday, 01.18.10.



The *mandatory* All-User Meetings for the Birck Nanotechnology Center will
be held on *Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at 5:30 PM* and *Thursday, January
21, 2010 at 5:30 PM *in *MTHW 210*.

Matthews Hall is located on the northeast corner of State and University
Streets, about four blocks east of the Birck Nanotechnology Center.

The meetings should last approximately 90 minutes.

Please note that attendance at one of these meetings is mandatory for all
people who work in the BNC laboratories and/or cleanroom.  Those who have
offices in the BNC but do not work in the laboratories and cleanroom are
invited to attend, but attendance is not mandatory.

*Please arrive on time!*  If you arrive late, you will not be admitted to
the meeting.

Professor *Joerg Appenzeller*, ECE, for a 2009 IBM Faculty Award.



Professor *Mark Lundstrom*, ECE, was presented with an IEEE Award at the
International Semiconductor Device Research Symposium. The van der Ziel
Award was established in honor of Professor Aldert van der Ziel for his long
and distinguished career as an educator and a research scientist. Past
recipients of the Aldert van der Ziel Award include Arthur Milnes, Lester
Eastman, Herbert Kroemer (Nobel Laureate), Michael Shur, Marvin H. White,
James D. Plummer, and Ben Streetman.



*Young Purdue Researchers Honored by NSF*: Purdue's recipients this year are
*Yong Chen*, Demetra Evangelou, Kevin Gurney, Matthew Jones, Krista Nichols,
Dev Niyogi, Zheng Ouyang, *Jeffrey Rhoads*, Ann E. Rundell, Chih-Chun Wang,

Professor *Vladimir Shalaev* has won the 2010 Willis E. Lamb Award for his
pioneering studies of optical metamaterials and plasmonic nanostructures.
The award honors Willis E. Lamb, Jr., famous laser scientist and 1955 winner

*LIFE ON THE OUTSIDE*

*Ella Mary Coy* arrived on December 19th, born to John and Jen Coy. Ms. Coy
weighed in at 7 pounds, 9 ounces and was 19.5 inches long. John tells us
that "less than 25 min from the time we got to the room until Ella announced
her arrival with a hearty cry."

*Camille Elise Allain* arrived on Tuesday, 01.05.10. Birck's newest baby
girl weighs 6 pounds, 10 ounces and measures 18.5 inches long. All are well.

*PANDEMIC PREPAREDNESS*



Faculty, staff, and students who have fever or other influenza symptoms
should seek medical care. PLEASE DO NOT REPORT TO WORK WHILE ILL.

Birck Nanotechnology Center staff will be notified of an emergency situation
by telephone in the order set out in the BNC’s Phone Tree. BNC faculty
members will receive an e-mail message from Monica Allain or Tim Sands.

Members of the Faculty (Professors and Research Professors) are responsible
for contacting each of their group members, including graduate students,
undergraduate researchers, postdoctoral fellows and research scientists.
Specific instructions should be conveyed by phone if possible. All graduate
students should register for the Purdue University e-mail alert system at
http://news.uns.purdue.edu/mail.html.
