Purdue University

Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering

225 South University Street

West Lafayette, IN 47907

Biography:

Amjad Assi is a Ph.D. student at Purdue University in Agricultural & Biological Engineering. He received his B.S. from

Birzeit University in Civil Engineering and his Master of Science degree in Water Engineering from the same University.

Since 2003, Assi’s experience has been mainly related to water and environment development projects and research studies

in the Palestinian Territories and neighboring countries. These projects and studies have dealt with watershed management,

environmental assessment of pollution sources on water resources and vulnerability and risk management and mapping,

conventional water resources rehabilitation and development, hydrological monitoring, and civil engineering work

“construction and water distribution systems”. Assi is still having the position of a project manager at Palestinian Hydrology

Group (PHG).

Anne Dare

M.S. Graduate Student

Email: adare@purdue.edu

Purdue University

Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering

225 South University Street

West Lafayette, IN 47907

Biography:

Anne Dare is a Master's student at Purdue University with a joint appointment between Engineering Education, Global

Engineering Program, and Agricultural & Biological Engineering. She received her B.S. from Purdue University in

Agricultural & Biological Engineering in December of 2008. Her work as an Agricultural Engineer Student Trainee with

the USDA NRCS and as a member of the pilot Global Design Team has inspired her to pursue an advanced degree.

Anne is currently assessing international experiences/programs within the College of Engineering for their effectiveness

at meeting a set of "global engineering attributes." She is also part of a team which is developing a model to determine

what attributes influence a person's global competency and how to measure the degree of this competency. She hopes to

combine her technical skills and interest in humanitarian projects into a career in international extension and development.

American University of Beirut

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Beirut, Lebanon

Biography:

Majdi earned his BE in Civil Engineering (1998) and ME in Environmental & Natural Resources Engineering (2000)

from the American University of Beirut. Then, he worked on various environmental engineering and regional planning

projects in the Middle East and Africa before joining the ABEs PhD Program in August, 2005. He is currently working on a unique

interdisciplinary research involving theoretical development along with experimental data verification. This work

involves developing an interdisciplinary research on characterizing the cracking behavior of soils as well as the soil-water

scalingproblem. He hasdeveloped a new approach to assess the internal stresses in soils. An approach that is expected to

have amajor impact on understanding various stress related soil phenomena such as cracking and preferential flows that

contribute to major waterand water quality problems. He worked also on developing a complete teaching module titled

"Scaling in HydrologicProcesses" that was tutored in different courses in ABE, AGRY, and FNR. It includes lecture

material, lab assignment, and exam questions.
