LAB:
Girder/Header/Fill-beam Selection

WHERE CAN I FIND THIS?
AISC WET CD Labs Lab Files Lab 5

[Go to Tools and Tips main page for instructions on how to download AISC WET CD files directly from AISC.]
DESCRIPTION:
From the previously completed labs, students are to use the appropriate floor loads and tributary areas to calculate the load the given girder and beam will be subjected to. After loads are calculated, sections must be checked for strength, several sections are chosen to meet the design criteria, and in the end, the most economical (lightest) section may be selected. Then the section must be checked for stiffness.

Laterally Unsupported Beams

WHERE CAN I FIND THIS?
AISC WET CD Labs Lab Files Lab 6

[Go to Tools and Tips main page for instructions on how to download AISC WET CD files directly from AISC.]
DESCRIPTION:
From the previously completed labs, students are to use the appropriate floor loads and tributary areas to calculate the load the floor beam will be subjected to. Checking for strength and unbraced length effects, several sections are chosen which meet the design criteria, and in the end, the most economical (lightest) section is chosen.

SLIDE SHOW:
Beams and Girders
WHERE CAN I FIND THIS?
AISC WET CD Visual Aids Slide Shows Beams and Girders

[Go to Tools and Tips main page for instructions on how to download AISC WET CD files directly from AISC.]
DESCRIPTION:
This slide show covers the delivery and lay-down and erection of beams and girders. This is a good place to see the difference between beams and girders.

SLIDE SHOW:
Lateral Support
WHERE CAN I FIND THIS?
AISC WET CD Visual Aids Slide Shows Lateral Support

[Go to Tools and Tips main page for instructions on how to download AISC WET CD files directly from AISC.]
DESCRIPTION:
This slide show illustrates different methods for laterally supporting a beam. It is useful for understanding what constitutes lateral bracing when designing for lateral torsional buckling.

HANDOUT:
Beam Buckling Modes and Lateral Bracing
WHERE CAN I FIND THIS?
WET Files and Images Buckle_Bracing_Civjan.PDF
DESCRIPTION:
This 2-page handout neatly illustrates various beam buckling modes, as well as methods for laterally supporting a beam.

VIDEO:
Behavior of Unrestrained Steel Beams
WHERE CAN I FIND THIS?

DESCRIPTION:
The video demonstrates the major physical phenomena that are involved in the response of unrestrained steel beams to loading.

HANDS-ON DEMONSTRATION:
Beam Buckling Models
WHERE CAN I FIND THIS?
WET Files and Images BeamBuckling_Civjan.PDF
DESCRIPTION:
Use these instructions to make your own models to demonstrate beam buckling modes. All you need is some overhead transparency film and some packing tape! Dimensions are provided for models which will exhibit lateral torsional buckling, local flange buckling, and local web buckling.

HANDS-ON DEMONSTRATION:
Composite Beams
WHERE CAN I FIND THIS?
WET Files and Images Composite_Beam_Demo_Roddis.PDF
or click here to obtain PDF instructions.
DESCRIPTION:
This low-budget in-class demonstration lets students directly see composite action as well as the effect of placement of shear connectors on composite action. The directions are set up assuming the instructor or TA is making the models ahead of time and the instructor leading the demonstration. One can rewrite the instructions as an “experiment” to be conducted in-class by teams.

SLIDE SHOW:
Beams (PowerPoint module on design)
WHERE CAN I FIND THIS?
WET Files and Images Beams_Krone.PPT
or click here to download PowerPoint file.
DESCRIPTION:
This comprehensive PowerPoint module covers the design of beams and includes examples complete with shear and deflection checks. Examples are up-to-date with AISC 2005 Specification.

SPREADSHEETS:
Beam Design Spreadsheets
WHERE CAN I FIND THIS?
Download by clicking here.
DESCRIPTION:
The Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet application AISC2005-BeamDesignAid.xls calculates the LRFD and ASD flexural and shear design strengths of W- and M-shaped sections for a given unbraced length Lb, bending coefficient Cb, and material yield strength, Fy. Once these input values are specified, the flexural design strengths are automatically computed for all listed sections based on local and overall lateral-torsional buckling criteria. The user can then sort the sections based on size, strength, or stiffness. Sections that are presented in bold type are the most economical for the strength level they have.

Download by clicking here.
DESCRIPTION:
Use this spreadsheet to illustrate computation of moment capacity for W sections as limited by yielding and lateral torsional buckling. Enter different W-shapes, moment demands, unbraced lengths, and Cb and Fy values; moment capacity curves are plotted. Courtesy of John Zachar, MSOE AE Dept.
