TEACHING GUIDE: Incorporation of Writing Assignments into Steel Design Courses
This guide shows how assignments based on written review of articles on steel buildings can be used in steel design courses. Through these assignments, students look at how structures behave and consider alternative designs.

LEARNING MODULES : Stability: Using Computer Software as a Virtual Lab for Learning Structural Stability
Learning modules provide a virtual lab for understanding topics such as elastic and inelastic flexural and lateral-torsional buckling, inelastic force redistribution, local buckling, and second-order effects. Modules utilize MASTAN2, software available at no cost.

CASE STUDY : Four Story Office Building Case Study
Use this teaching aid to access hundreds of photographs and other graphical information that documents the process of detailing, fabricating, and erecting the steel frame for a typical building. Included is information on material procurement, sequencing, site logistics, schedules, and equipment, as well as technical aspects of the project.
Download the PowerPoint slides, the Digital Library Images, or browse the Case Study online for project drawings or specific photographs>>

SLIDE SETS: Teaching Aids for Structural Steel Design Courses
This series of slide sets can be used for instruction on beams, compression members, tension members, and combined forces. Pick and choose slides to incorporate into your lectures. The slides are divided in the "theory" and "manual" sections; the "manual" sections have been updated to the 14th edition steel construction manual.

National Student Steel Bridge Competition

The NSSBC gets underway with its first conference competition to be held later this month.

The 2014 National Student Steel Bridge Competition kicks off with the first conference competition later this month, on Saturday, January 18 at the University of Texas at Arlington. Seventeen other regional competitions will take place leading up to the National Competition set for May 23-24 at the University of Akron. Good luck to all participating teams!

NASCC Educator and Student Sessions

Get ready for the 2014 NASCC: The Steel Conference, to be held this March in Toronto!

Faculty and students are welcome to register and attend the 2014 NASCC: The Steel Conference! This year, The Steel Conference is set to take place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre March 26-28 in Toronto, Canada. Registration is free to AISC Student Members and is discounted for AISC Educator Members. Information on special programs offered to faculty and students follows.

On Wednesday, March 26 from 8am - noon, AISC will host a session for educators focused on serviceability. James M. Fisher of Computerized Structural Design, Larry Griffis of Walter P Moore, and Thomas M. Murray of Virginia Tech will give presentations on serviceability considerations and design approaches. Please be sure to register for this complimentary session while registering for The Steel Conference. Full-time US and Canadian faculty can receive up to $300 in travel reimbursement for attending this session. (Completed expense form and receipts required for reimbursement.)

On Thursday, March 27 from 10am - 2:15pm, AISC will present the fourth annual Students Connecting with Industry Sessions (SCIS) program. Terri Meyer Boake, Architecture Professor at the University of Waterloo, will discuss designing with Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel (AESS) and the collaboration between engineers, architects and fabricators. Sean Smith, Principal at Entuitive, will speak on the transition from student to practicing engineer. The day will also include lunch, an optional exhibit hall tour, and a unique afternoon session called "Direct Connect," where students can interact one-on-one with key representatives from the steel industry. For AISC Student Members, registration to NASCC and SCIS is complimentary. Student Members who attend the entire SCIS program will be eligible for up to $175 in travel reimbursement. (Completed expense form and receipts required for reimbursement.)

For more information on AISC's Educator and Student sessions at The Steel Conference, please visit this link: Faculty & Students at The 2014 NASCC: The Steel Conference

Special Note for Canadian Faculty and Students: The Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) will be co-sponsoring the special student and educator sessions. Student and Educator Members of CISC also can receive the same reimbursement benefits mentioned above! Click for more information on CISC membership.

Finally, keep in mind that you will need a passport for traveling to and from Toronto if you are traveling from outside of Canada. Be sure your passport is current, and please plan ahead!

Steel Design Student Competition

Note important dates for the ACSA/AISC design competition and the ACSA annual meeting.

The program for the 14th annual ACSA/AISC Steel Design Student Competition has been announced. Category I is titled "Border-Crossing Station," which challenges students to design a border-crossing station sited on a boundary between two countries. As usual, Category II "Open" offers architecture students the opportunity to select a site and building program using steel as the primary material. The deadline to register for the competition is March 19, 2014. For more information, visit www.aisc.org/studentdesign.

Also, the 102nd ACSA Annual Meeting will take place in Miami, Florida this year April 10-12. The 2014 ACSA Annual Meeting, "GLOBALIZING ARCHITECTURE / Flows and Disruptions," will highlight exchanges between architecture and the dynamics of place, power, and social responsibility. Click to learn more about the ACSA Annual Meeting.

AISC Educator Workshop

New to teaching steel design or know someone who is? Have suggestions for workshop topics?

AISC is developing a workshop for educators who are new to teaching steel design. AISC would love to hear your ideas for topics of interest. Contact Erin Criste at criste@aisc.org with your suggestions and to let us know if you or someone you know would be interested in attending.

Reinforcing the Point

Use SteelWise articles to brush up on your (and your students') steel know-how.

The SteelWise feature in Modern Steel Construction provides practical knowledge on a number of topics, ranging from stability analysis, to how choice of corrosion protection affects connection design, to practical considerations for expansion joints in buildings.

The January 2014 SteelWise installment provides a helpful guide to reinforcing existing structural framing members. The discussion includes consideration of factors and issues such as potential obstructions, coating removal for welding, and welding to loaded members.
