Professor Balakrishnan's research interests are primarily in the areas of control, and the application of convex optimization to problems from systems, control, robotics, communication and signal processing. He is a coauthor of the research monograph Linear Matrix Inequalities in System and Control Theory, SIAM, 1994. During 1999-2001, Professor Balakrishnan was the chairman of the IEEE Technical Committee on Robust Control (under the IEEE Control Systems Society). He has served on the IEEE Control Systems Society Conference Editorial Board, and on program committees for the IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, American Control Conference, and IEEE Conference on Control Applications and Computer-Aided Control Systems Design. Besides serving as a referee for numerous technical journals and conferences, Professor Balakrishnan was a guest-editor for a two-part special issue of the International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control on Linear Matrix Inequalities in Control Theory and Applications, published in November-December 1996. He served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic control (TAC) during January 2001-December 2003, and as an Associate Editor of the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization (SICON) during 2000-2004. He was appointed to the IEEE CSS Board of Governors for 2014, currently serves on the IEEE CSS Executive as the Deputy Director of Operations, and is slated to serve as the Director of Operations during 2016-18.
Professor Balakrishnan received an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award (ONR-YI) 1997. From the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue, he received the Ruth and Joel Spira Outstanding Teacher Award in 1997, and the Honeywell Award for excellence in teaching in 2001. He was named a Purdue University Scholar in 2008. Professor Balakrishnan is a Fellow of the IEEE.
