Numbers Too Close to Text in Table of Contents

Mark Senn

How can I put more space between numbers and text in the table of contents?

If you have wide numbers in the table of contents sometimes the numbers will come too close to the text.

To change

11.12This is a Section Heading. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10
to
11.12 This is a Section Heading . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10
in the table of contents adjust the \@@padding length. To adjust the \@@padding length put the following between your \documentclass and \begin{document} commands:
\makeatletter
\setlength{\@@padding}{1ex} % an "ex" is a unit of measure that is about the height of a "x"
\makeatother
Change the 1ex as needed for more (e.g., 1.5ex) or less (e.g., 0.7ex) space.
