Alumnus AJ Metcalf (research scientist at Air Force Research Laboratory – US Space Force) has been selected for both the Arthur S. Flemming Award and an early career Stellar Award.
The Arthur S. Flemming Award honors exceptional early career public servants from a variety of federal agencies. Dr. Metcalf received the award in recognition of his application of quantum and communications technologies to develop a new generation of global positioning system and communication capabilities.
The Stellar Award is granted by the Rotary National Award for Space Achievement (RNASA) Foundation to honor the dedication of space workers. Dr. Metcalf received an early career Stellar Award for his outstanding contributions in developing new spacecraft Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) and communication technologies and capabilities.

Prof. Andrew Weiner is the 2023 recipient of the Charles Hard Townes Medal. Weiner is recognized for ground-breaking work bringing optical frequency combs to the quantum world and developing innovative applications spanning several fields, including coherent control, generation and line-by-line manipulation of frequency combs, and ultrabroadband radio-frequency photonics. The Charles Hard Townes Medal recognizes an individual or group for outstanding experimental or theoretical work, discovery or invention in the field of quantum electronics.

Alumus VR Supradeepa from the Center for Nano Science and Engineering, IISc Bangalore, India, has been awarded the 2022 ICO/ICTP (International Commission for Optics/International Centre for Theoretical Physics) Gallieno Denardo Award for his significant contributions to the field of high power fiber lasers and integrated non linear optics, including cascaded Raman fiber lasers, high power supercontinuum laser sources, and on-chip frequency combs. The award ceremony followed by the awardee talks was live-streamed on youtube on February 14, 2023.

Ultrafast lab members and collaborators have developed a technique that will allow single photon detectors of any resolution to take accurate time-of-flight measurements (ToF) of entangled photons. These results were published in Optica.

Lab alum Dr. A.J. Metcalf has been awarded an Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Early Career Award (ECA). The AFRL Science and Engineering ECA recognizes junior scientists and engineers for significant research or engineering achievements during the onset of their career. These individuals, who also receive a $300,000 multiyear research grant, have demonstrated exceptional in-house research contributions. Dr. Metcalf is space mission area lead; Space Vehicles Directorate at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico.

2022, New measurements quantifying qudits provide glimpse of quantum future

A multi-institue team from Purdue's Ultrafast Optics lab, Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL), and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) has developed an effective method for measuring high-dimensional qudits encoded in quantum frequency combs. The team fully characterized an entangled pair of eight-level qudits, which formed a 64-dimensional quantum space—quadrupling the previous record for discrete frequency modes. These results were published in Nature Communications.

Ultrafast Optics Lab members from Purdue University — Prof. Andrew Weiner and alumni Hsuan-Hao Lu and Navin Lingaraju — alongside and collaborators from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and Stanford University have developed and demonstrated a novel, fully functional quantum local area network, or QLAN, to enable real-time adjustments to information shared with geographically isolated systems at ORNL using entangled photons passing through optical fiber.

Nikolai Knight is currently an undergraduate student in physics from the University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff. His SURF project involved working in Ultrafast Optics and Optical Fiber Communications Laboratory with faculty mentor Andrew Weiner, the Scifres Family Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Nikolai also worked with graduate student mentor Suparna Seshadri and postdoctoral researcher Poolad Imany. Good luck for your future, Nikolai!

2018, Researchers demonstrate new building blocks in quantum computing

The collaboration between our Purdue team, including Hsuan-Hao "Peach" Lu and Prof. Weiner, and our alumnus Joseph Lukens (with fellow research scientists from ORNL Quantum Information Science Group), has successfully demonstrated "independent operations simultaneously on two qubits encoded on photons of different frequencies."
