Application developers are doing their best to blur the border between the local computer and the remote network in the interest of improved usability, yet this trend also means that it is becoming increasingly harder for novice and intermediate users to know what they are sharing and to whom. Studies show that a large percentage of users are inadvertently sharing private information without their knowledge. We present TrustNeighborhoods, a 2D/3D visualization technique designed to address this problem by making trust and sharing relationships explicit and providing a mental model of the network that users can quickly and easily adopt. A user study indicates a significant improvement in trust assignment using our technique compared to unaided assignment.
