Synopsis: Applying principles of human-computer interaction to improve human performance of mundane tasks in computer games.

Details

Computer games are somewhat peculiar in that, unlike general computer applications, the designers are not concerned with making every task as easy and effortless as possible---some tasks (such as hitting the bad guy or landing a perfect punch-and-kick combo) should be difficult to perform. However, there certainly exists tasks within computer games that have no intrinsic impact on gameplay and that are often needlessly difficult, such as picking up items in a 3D adventure game or selecting friendly units in a RTS. In this research initiative, we try to apply sound principles of human-computer interaction to help these problems in a general way.
