Note on TRMs
TRMs are different from ECRMs in two fundamental ways. First, the TRM has a large amount of open space and thus is soil filled and then seed during installation (i.e. it is essentally buried in the ground). The roots of the vegation then become synergistically entangled with the mat. ECRMs on the other hand are deneser, lower profile (thinner), mats. The channel is seeded before the mat is laid out and vegetation grows up through the mat.

The second difference stems from the first. Namely, the more open TRM is more vulnerable to erosion than the ECRM while vegetation is being established. However, the entangled roots with the TRM make it significantly stronger in the long term than the ECRM. Thus, while a TRM can provide ECRM benefits (short term protection and some long term protectioin), the reverse is not true. Cheaper ECRMs cannot withstand the flows fully vegetated TRMs can.
