Note on ECRMs
ECRMs are laid out on a seeded channel bed and staked into place. The vegetation grows up through the mat to stabilize the channel. Notice that this is different from the TRMs. TRMs are more open and thus are backfilled with soil and then seeded. The vegetation's roots in this case becomes entangled with the mat.
The main difference is this: in the short term the ECRM provides better eroison control protection because it is much denser (less pore space in the blanket) than the TRM. However, because the roots engtangle with the TRM and not the ECRM, the TRM can resist higher stresses in the long term, fully vegetated case. In order to account for this short term deficiency, TRMs are often covered with straw or mulch until the vegetation is established.
