Pointwise Operations and Gamma

Abstract

This laboratory discusses various types of point operations applied to images.  Enhancement techniques such as histogram equalization and contrast stretching are discussed.  The concept of gamma which describes a nonlinear behavior of display devices is covered, as well as the point operation used to compensate for this nonlinearity.

To run this laboratory, you will need:

Laboratory Procedure - Instructions for running the laboratory in pdf format.

Monitor Controls - Supplementary document by Charles Poynton describing the Black Level and Picture controls for a video monitor.  Document is in pdf format.

race.tif - Image used in lab.

kids.tif - Image used in lab.

linear.tif - Image stored on a linear scale.

gamma15.tif - Image gamma corrected for gamma=1.5.
