Near the Municipality Building. The line is for the earthquake relief material.
Note the collapsed south wing of the Municipality.

To the north of the Municipality.

There used to be some 80 to 100 m land here.

Looking east. Yuzbasilar at distance.
An unbelievable landslide occurred. A four-story hotel (Koruk Hotel), Koruk restaurant,
the road in front of them, playgrounds, cafes near the shore, and the small docking platform
for passenger ships... all gone, along with people. They were not able to locate  the Koruk Hotel yet.
It was probably under the landslide.

Looking west.

The following photo from Milliyet shows how this place looked like soon after the earthquake.
Propert of Milliyet.

The TUPRAS refinery was on fire. The ship in the photo is the passenger
ferry `Ataturk' and it was off the old coast at the time of the earthquake.
It survived the submarine landslide and the wave generated thereafter, and landed
near the new coastline formed after the loss of some 80-100 m land.

Looking northwest. Note the TUPRAS refinery at distance.

Marks of soil spread.

Looking south.
Walking west from the Municipality, we saw this adobe filled wood-frame two-story house.
It had been abandoned prior to the earthquake, and sustained no extra damage.

Looking back (north).

All empty now.

At the end of the street. Looking east.

Just on the right.
Note the spacing of confinement tie-bars ("etriye" in Turkish) in particular.
Never mention the inadequate reinforcing bars.

You can see the tip of the Yuzbasilar peninsula. Further back is Izmit on the other side of the Gulf.

Moving westward and looking back.

Looking west. The peninsula is where Halidere is - another district with lost sealine.

Note the woodframe/brick-infill house and its collapsed R/C frame neighbor.

You cannot see it well in the photo, but the lady near the building is hand-pumping water from a well.

Preparing the surface on which the foundation is going to sit. Seriously!

This is not the only lightpole in this whipped-neck state.

And looking south, one realizes that the calm sea and the standing structures along the
newly-formed-seashore simply fool the passerbys. The road is totally blocked.

It is leaning eastward. Note the partially collapsed first story.

Continuing to walk towards west.
