Newsletter - March 1998 - Issue 3
Dear Parents of Challenge and Honor Program Students,

We want to offer our sincere congratulations to our Senior class. A list of Jeff students who rank at the top of the 1998 Class is on the back page. Many of these students have participated in the Challenge Program through their educational experience. We take pride in their efforts and accomplishments and wish them well in future endeavors. Dr. Seuss said it best.....

   "And will you succeed?
   Yes! You will indeed!
   98 and 3/4 % guaranteed."

On March 4, Dr. Eiler met with parents of elementary Challenge students. He opened discussion of possible options for programmatic changes in the self-contained elementary classes due to fluctuating enrollment and the need for fiscal responsibility. Serious consideration is being given to a single site plan. Additional information is being gathered from parents. Issues and concerns noted from the parents' discussion are being addressed. A recommendation will not be given to the Lafayette Schools' Board of Trustees until May.

It is the desire of the LSC and the Challenge Program to provide your child with an enriched and accelerated curriculum in a learning environment that will allow each to reach his/her potential.

Sincerely,

Dr. Vicki Vaughn

Challenge Parents Group Formed

The parents of children in the Challenge Program have formed a support organization known as the Challenge Parents Group. The main objective of the Challenge Parents Group is to be a partner in the success of the Lafayette School Corporation Challenge Program and our students. We plan to facilitate communication among Challenge parents, and between the parents and administrators.

Our goals this year are to get to know one another better and find ways to support the Challenge program. We all agree that this program is special and needs our continuing support. We would like to act as a resource group, both to the administration and to parents of Challenge students.

We have a meeting scheduled for parents on Tuesday, March 24, at 7pm at Edgelea Elementary in the gym. We will have a short presentation concerning how students transition to Challenge at the 1st, 2nd, 6th and 9th grade levels. We will also start planning a picnic this summer, where students, parents, prospective students and teachers can meet in a social setting.

If you or any of your friends have any questions about this group or the Challenge Program in general, the steering committee members have volunteered to act as contacts. If you know of a prospective student whose parents have questions or concerns about the program, make sure they have our phone numbers and give us a call. We all believe strongly in this program, and want to make it prosper.

See you around!!

Challenge Program Survey

The Class of 1998 is the first class of students to be identified for the Challenge Program for a First Grade Cluster. A survey will be given to our Seniors addressing what Challenge classes and extra-curricular activities they participated in at Jeff and what college plans are being made. The survey also asks their opinions on their Challenge Program experiences. When we compile this information, we will make every attempt to share it with you. Please encourage your Senior to complete and return the survey.
