Newsletter - October 2000 - Issue 1
Dear Parents of Challenge and Honor Program Students,

The year is off to a flying start year. ISTEP and NWEA tests are already completed. Challenge Excel has started in Grade 6 at Tecumseh Middle School. Both Tecumseh and Sunnyside maintain the Challenge Program for identified students.

Again this year we offer several opportunities for parents to participate in the Challenge Program at a level that pertains to their student(s). The Challenge Program Parents Group is open for parents of all levels, elementary, middle school or high school. In early September the elementary parents hosted "A Dessert Night." This was an opportunity for parents of students in the cluster/self-contained classrooms to meet each other. It was particularly helpful to the students/parents new to the program. We had approximately 75 students and parents attend this year.

The Broad Based Planning Team will have the first of three meetings on October 24. (Check under FYI for time and location.) This is open to all parents and community members interested in the issues of the Challenge Program. Please feel free to attend at anytime.

On November 8, Wednesday, the Challenge Program Parents' Group will host a meeting for all parents. The focus of the evening will be Challenge Middle School Excel and an overview of the Honor/AP program at the high school. Nancy Bauman, Tecumseh, Denise Walker, Jeff, and I will be present to present information and answer questions. (Check under FYI for time and location.)

The Challenge Program constantly seeks the best ways to meet the needs of the students in the Lafayette School Corporation. Your interest as parents is very important to the success of the program and ultimately your student(s). Your time and interest is always appreciated. We are looking forward to another exciting year. If you ever have any questions please call me at Edgelea, 772-4780.

Sincerely,

Dr. Vicki Vaughn
Challenge Program Coordinator
