High School Honors Program Teacher Referral Social Studies The following is a checklist that is used by your child's middle school math teacher to evaluate his or her interest and aptitude in math and recommendation for the high school honor's program.
The teacher rates the frequency with which he or she notices each of the following behaviors by using the words seldom, occasionally, quite often, or almost always.
Behaviors:
1. Reads widely on social issues from a variety of books and magazines.
2. Can become absorbed in the investigation of a wide variety of topics.
3. Displays intellectual curiosity; becomes rapidly interested in all sorts of topics that are not required or assigned.
4. Is skilled in and enjoys analyzing topics, in getting to the root of the problem.
5. Is attracted toward cognitive complexity, enjoys thinking about tangled and confusing matters such as puzzles, acrostics, mystery stories, etc.
6. Is willing to ask questions that are open-ended and philosophical, such as the meaning of life or the nature of injustice in the world.
7. Possesses a wide vocabulary which is used precisely and appropriately.
8. Enjoys language, reading, conversation, listening and verbal communication.
9. Is sensitive to social issues, can see ethical and moral problems that others do not.
10. Is able to suspend judgment, to entertain doubts and alternative explanations and points of view.
11. Can engage in intellectual play; enjoys puns, language games, etc.
12. Enjoys the process of research, of investigation, not only for what it turns up but for its own sake.
13. Recalls minute details, formulae, etc.; able to recall and use obscure facts when needed.
14. has an intrinsic interest in social themes, complex public issues, explanations, theories of causation.
