The following is a checklist that is used by your child's middle school math teacher to evaluate his or her interest and aptitude in math and recommendation for the high school honor's program.

The teacher rates the frequency with which he or she notices each of the following behaviors by using the words seldom, occaisionally, quite often, or almost always.

Behaviors:

• Able to generalize, goes beyond memorization, relates concepts to realistic applications.
• Organized in handling data, flexible, accepts ambiguity while solving problems, attends to critical elements.
• Persistent, able to concentrate, works hard, motivated, interested.
• Can delay closure while trying to solve a problem.
• Resourcesful and spontaneous in seeking ways to solve a problem.
• Interested in numbers, quantitative relationships, sees usefulness or applications of mathematics.
• Learned math concepts and processes earlier than other children.
• Good at verbalizing math concepts, processes and solutions.
• Grasps the symbolic nature of mathematics easily.
• Reasons effectively, uses hypothetical constructs in solving problems.
• Enjoys trying to solve difficult problems, sometimes playful, likes puzzles and logic problems.
• Able to visualize spatially, can create visual images of problems.
• Able to come up with original solutions or to use unique methods for solution.
• Sometimes able to solve problems intuitively, cannot always explain methods used.
• Able to recall relevant information or concepts in solving problems, sees or recognizes the critical elements, connects salient elements of problems.

Based on the evidence in the list and any other significant details the teacher has noticed, he or she writes down the recommendation for placement into the high school honors math program.
