Language Arts

The following is a checklist that is used by your child's middle school language arts teacher to evaluate his or her interest and aptitude in language arts and recommendation for the high school honor's program.

The teacher rates the frequency with which he or she notices each of the following behaviors by using the words seldom, occasionally, quite often, or almost always.

Behaviors:

1. Interested in words, definitions, derivations, has an advanced vocabulary.

2. Sees details, is a good observer, makes connections.

3. Organizes ideas, sequences well.

4. Has a good sense of humor, uses and responds to satire, puns.

5. reads widely in a variety of types of literature.

6. Original, creative, comes up with unique ideas.

7. Creative, develops believable characters and situations when writing.

8. Delays closure while investigating a topic.

9. Sees author's point of view, mood.

10. Elaborates well, uses colorful expressions.

11. Able to visualize and translate images into written form.

12. Curious, likes independent study and research.

13. Writes often and extensively.

14. Uses words effectively, writes descriptions, communicates emotions.
