CREATING A CONFERENCE

First start sdr tool (if you have never started it before, check out JOINING A CONFERENCE first). Click on New. You can now choose between an advertised session or quick call to someone. For creating advertisement, click on Create advertised session. The requester window pops up and you are expected to input some basic information. You need to input the Session Name and Description of the session. Apart from that, you can define the Type of Session, input an web address (if you have made a web page describing the session), set the ttl (Time To Live) value, set the type of Media used, time when the session is going to take place and the contact person.

Depending on the ttl value, the session is going to be multicast only within your site or throughout the region (not quite precisely defined) or it can be seen throughout the whole world.

IMPORTANT: Be very careful with the ttl field. If it is less or equal to 15, the traffic you create is not going to leave your site, but if larger, it might go out. Since only around 500 kbits/s is reserved for the MBONE events, it might overload the MBONE and, apart from not being nice, you might receive lots of angry emails or even phone calls (in case you put your phone # in the session information field). If you plan on multicasting over a region or even world, make sure you schedule that session using the MBONE mailing list.

By clicking on Create the session is created, though not yet running. Now sdr starts to advertise the session every couple of minutes and other users, if they have sdr running, might expect to see it in their session lists soon.

Now you can join your session by clicking on it (see JOINING A CONFERENCE for details).

Once the conferencing tools are running, you will have to set them to transmit data, not only receive it. See the next section for more info on using the proper tools.

Quick Call under the New menu should be used if you would like quickly to create a session that is not going to last long, like a group chat or group meeting, for example. In that case, you need only to input Session Name. You can set the Media type, Expected Duration, Purpose and the Area Reached. After that, you can create a list of users that you want to invite to that session. If running sdr tool, they are going to be notified of their invitation. They can then accept or decline the invitation. Session created like this is not advertised.

DELETING THE SESSION - You can delete a session only if you have created it in the first place. By clicking on your advertised session, the information window will appear showing two new options - Edit and Delete. Clicking on Edit will allow you to change the session parameters. Clicking on Delete will delete your session from the list of advertisements. Note that it might take some time (several minutes) in order that the session be deleted from other user's lists.
