Halogen Oven Moisture Content Determination

Halogen drying is based on the thermogravimetric principle. The moisture is determined from the direct weight lost by the sample due to heating by an intense halogen light.

The Mettler HG53 Halogen Moisture Analyzer determines the initial weight of the sample. The sample is quickly heated by the internal halogen dryer unit causing moisture to vaporize. During the drying operation, the instrument continuously determines the weight of the sample and displays the loss of moisture. Upon completion of drying, the moisture content or the dry solids content of the sample is displayed.

According to the manufacturer, the halogen moisture analyzer can determine the moisture content of virtually any substance to an accuracy of 0.01%. It utilizes higher operating temperatures and therefore the drying times are shorter (ranging from 30 seconds to 240 minutes). It reaches its maximum power quickly and has a faster rate of heating than conventional or infrared drying ovens.
