Volumetric Karl Fischer Determination of Water Content

During volumetric Karl Fischer determination, the iodine is added to the titration vessel volumetrically.

The Mettler DL18 and DL35 Titrators manufactured by Mettler Toledo, Inc., Highstown, N.J. are two examples of instruments that use this type of determination. These models are capable of measuring from 10mg to 500mg of water with a detection limit of 10mg. They work well for moistures ranging from 0.1% to 100%. If water is freely available in the sample, the titration time is typically 1 - 2 minutes.

The Mettler DL18 Titrator is good for performing routine analyses that utilize a single test method (one set of Karl Fischer Reagents). The Mettler DL35 Titrator can test a wide variety of samples using several different methods.

These types of titrators can be used in the food industry to determine the water content in oils, fats, margarine, cheese, milk products, sugar, bread, cakes, etc.
