Wood growth estimation

This example uses images provided by Southern Forest Experiment Station, Research Work Unit 4109 and Dan Leduc. The objective of the color classification is to recognized the different type of wood: early/spring wood, summer/late wood, bark, and some mineral staining.

In this case the color classes are:

The data base is formed with these five classes.

Color classification in this case is the first step of a complex analysis. Once the different king of wood are identified in the image, quantitative measurement can be made to estimate yearly growth and other growth accident (fire). The quantitative measurements can be done only after color classification of the different type of wood.

Quality evaluation by color grading

This work is done by Harry Gibson and Lee Haney (haney@ecn.purdue.edu) in Agricultural enginering. Wood color grading is important in furniture manufacturing. Grading is generally done on the floor plant and manually. The number and type of color grades vary with the wood species (oak, cherry, fir...), and the quality of the furniture. A conservative estimation is five different color classes on a line. In our example there are four grades.
