Drainage professional responsibilities and how watershed groups can coordinate with drainage professionals

We compared and contracted county surveyor and drain commissioner highlighting laws and responsibilities in Michigan and Indiana and highlighted how watershed groups can work with drainage professionals

How we can affect watersheds workshop/lesson plans

We created workshop/lesson plans for others to use that include everything they might need to educate about watersheds using state science standards

We conducted farmer interviews where we video and voice recorded farmer testimonies, developed cover crop signs/advertising, and highlighted failures and how they have been overcome

We showcased improper planning/installation (Epic Fail), highlighted a corresponding successful project from a variety of topics – lakes, stormwater, agriculture, forest land.

Ahh, Algae!
Kassia Groszewski and Courtney Pruitt
We created a decision-making guide/flow chart for quick determination for landowners/lake associations – is your algae bloom potentially harmful or not?  Who can you contact if you are concerned? Our info sheets describe different forms of algae commonly seen in Indiana, how to tell the difference between harmful and non-harmful blooms, and potential impacts of coming into contact with harmful algae and algal toxins.

Marketing Clean Water Indiana grant to urban landowners within a half mile of a waterbody

We assisted the Steuben County SWCD to market the availability of funding for their CWI grant.

Cover crops and urban plantings 
Austin Green, Allison Martin and Molly Baughman
We created a display for plants to promote conservation practices (cover crops, native plantings) and developed appropriate educational material. The display compares rainfall from different management strategies highlighting options for reducing erosion and nutrient loss.

Dan worked with Pathway to Water Quality to updated educational programming focused on drinking water. The panel will be designed and posted in advance of the 2019 Indiana State Fair.

Simplifying Rule 5 Compliance

We developed a plan to revise and simplify the Hoosier Heartland Field Pocket Guide.

If it’s yellow… what’s coming out of that pipe?

We created an informational video describing the impacts of combined sewer overflows and wastewater treatment plants; the difference between stormwater, wastewater and combined systems; and highlight safety, aesthetics and purposes.

Intro to environmental science and community school outreach: introduction to a biotic index
Kathryn Mudica and Erika Smith
We created a 36 specimen museum for streams ranging from high to low quality, assembled a biotic index booklet for each kit and developed an instructor guide that can be printed for each participant.

In-lieu fee program for wetlands

We provided information highlighting why wetlands are beneficial and why mitigating their loss is important; highlighted the in-lieu fee program and how it works including pros and cons/cost-benefit analysis and provide case studies of other in-lieu fee programs outside of Indiana.

Rain garden maintenance guide

We prepared/provided guidance for long-term maintenance of rain gardens in digital and print format.

Adopt a drain
Eric Shideler, Cindy Woodall and Nick Parkman
We developed an educational piece to explain how litter/trash creates problems in water systems and sewage drains and ultimately affects our streams, river and waterways. Our program will recruit public participation to combat those issues and educate at the same.
