Space Chase is a mechanical hand crank toy with an electrically powered moving background that simulates two ships chasing each other through the stars. The toy utilizes a scotch yoke mechanism paired with a four bar linkage to achieve this motion. The scotch yoke drives the ships up and down while also contacting the four bar linkage making it appear like the ships are conducting a banking maneuver. The screen is driven by a small DC motor that is connected to a quarter inch dowel rod with a 3D printed part. Two bearings on the opposing rod allow for the paper screen to freely slide over the dowel. The moving screen paired with the movement generated by the scotch yoke makes gives the illusion that the ships are actually flying.
