Online Master of Science in Engineering Education
Online Master of Science in Engineering Education (MSENE)
The online Master of Science in Engineering Education (MSENE) program is conveniently designed for professional engineers, industry training professionals, university faculty members, and graduate-level STEM students to advance their skills without disrupting their careers or current studies.
Purdue University’s School of Engineering Education (ENE) is the world's first such academic unit, originally designed for Ph.D. students who wish to pursue rigorous research in how engineering, science, technology, and math, are best taught, learned, and practiced. The master’s degree has been added for those who want to understand both the underlying theory and the practical applications of engineering education research but are not currently ready to pursue a Ph. D. Purdue University is ranked #2 in best online engineering master's programs by U.S. News & World Report (2023).
The online master’s program covers both the theory and the practice of engineering education and is designed to be valuable to four different audiences:
- Ph.D. students in engineering or a closely related field who are preparing for a faculty career.
- Current engineering or science faculty who would like to become more effective teachers.
- Mid-career engineers and scientists thinking about a second career in education.
- Industry professionals, consultants, and others seeking continuing professional development and additional qualifications to support technical training and education.
Online Engineering Education courses offered in the following areas:
Foundations of Engineering Education | History and Philosophy of Engineering Education |
Engineering Education Inquiry - Methods of Gathering and Analyzing Data | Theories of Development and Engineering Thinking |
Content, Assessment, and Pedagogy - Building an Effective Course | Engineering Education Methods |

Online Engineering Education Graduate Paths
The 30-credit hour non-thesis curriculum is carefully designed to provide high quality, convenient, versions of the on-campus courses. The online courses are taught by the same faculty who offer the on-campus sections and provide multiple opportunities for online students to interact with and receive feedback from both the faculty members and other students in the course.
For those interested in a shorter graduate program, Engineering Education offers an online graduate certificate entitled Teaching and Learning in Engineering. Courses in the graduate certificate can be counted toward the MS in Engineering Education if the student subsequently decides to pursue the master’s degree.
Some students in the master’s program may decide to pursue the on-campus Ph.D. in Engineering Education. The master’s program is designed so that most, if not all, of the MS courses would count toward the Ph.D.
Online Plan of Study Details
In ENE, you'll find an enthusiastic and committed community of scholars who lead in building the discipline's intellectual framework. Faculty and doctoral students work collaboratively across the entire educational continuum (preschool through college, extending into the workplace), and our alumni find employment in academia, industry, and professional organizations.
After you begin your studies at Purdue, an academic advisor will help you create a Plan of Study (POS) to best fit your educational needs and career goals. Every POS varies based on student interest, time, and course load. The flexible nature of our programs makes it possible for you to take time off from your studies if you need to. The majority of students choose to begin their studies by taking one course at a time to ensure they find a successful balance of work, life, and school.
