What is Agile?

Agile’s widespread adoption is driven by the discovery that organizations must become agile to be competitive in a customer-driven, continuously changing marketplace. Agile methodology is used to effectively manage high uncertainty projects where requirements are not well understood or are rapidly evolving. Agile is gaining momentum across companies and industries because it improves customer satisfaction and return-on-investment (ROI).

Read a practical example of how a Purdue team has successfully implemented agile in their business function.

The Agile Methodology Emphasizes

  • Inspiring those doing the work and giving autonomy to teams so that innovation is accelerated and optimized.

  • Valuing transparency and continuous improvement over predictability and standardized plans.

  • Having open and interactive conversations that drive employee performance more effectively than top-down directives.

Agile Use Case

Most software development companies are moving away from a waterfall approach to an agile approach. In a traditional model, design, development, coding, and testing for the entire system are performed sequentially. In agile, the system solution is divided into features. Each feature is completed in terms of design, development, code, testing and rework before the feature is called done. There are no separate phases; rather, all the work is done in a single, iterative phase.
