  1. (07/22/2017) The Lab’s invention in MR-integrated recording and stimulating devices is highlighted in news.

  2. (07/21/2017) Students’ success recognized in news released at Purdue BME. Junxing Shi, Kun-Han Lu, Ranajay Mandal, Jiayue Cao all won awards from either the International Society of Magnetic Resonance for Medicine, or the Organization of Human Brain Mapping.

  3. (07/18/2017) Junxing Shi received his master degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue.

  4. (06/30/2017) Junxing Shi, a graduate student in the lab, delivered an oral presentation about his work entitled “Deep recurrent neural network reveals a hierarchy of temporal receptive windows in the visual cortex” at the annual meeting of the organization of human brain mapping. For this work, Junxing was also awarded the highly competitive Merit Abstract Award. Several other lab members (Haiguang Wen, Kuan Han, Jung-Hoon Kim) also attended this meeting, presenting several oral/poster presentations.

  5. (06/16/2017) The lab contributed to a collaborative project (PI: Prof. Georgia Malandraki) funded by NIDCD/NIH as a three year R21 project. The goal of the project is to investigate neuroplastic adapations of swallowing and speech in children with unilateral cerebral palsy, using MRI, electrophysiology, and behavioral methods.

  6. (06/08/2017) MR-Link LLC, a startup company founded by Dr. Liu, Ranajay Mandal, and Nishant Babaria, has taken off to commercialize the Lab’s hardware and software solutions to simultaneous recording and stimulation inside MRI. MR-Link LLC has received initial investment from Purdue Foundry.

  7. (06/07/2017) Kun-Han Lu, a PhD student in the lab, published a paper on Human Brain Mapping. Spontaneous activity in the visual cortex is organized by visual streams.

  8. (04/28/2017) The lab traveled to the Scientific Meeting of ISMRM at Hawaii. Dr. Liu gave an invited talk at the “Current Issues in Brain Function” study group; Tom Lu gave two oral presentations: one on fine-scale visual networks observed with resting state fMRI, the other on manganese enhanced MRI for imaging inflammation. Ranajay Mandal gave a power pitch presentation on MR-Link devices for simultaneous fMRI and EEG. Cherry Cao gave a poster presentation on brain activation with vagal nerve stimulation by using fMRI in rats. Haiguang Wen gave a poster presentation on mapping categorical representations on the visual cortex. Tom received the Summa Cum Laude Award. Tom, Ranajay, and Cherry all received the Magna Cum Laude Award on their individual abstracts. Congratulations for a fruitful meeting.

  9. (04/07/2017) Dr. Liu received a Team Award from the College of Engineering at Purdue. The Award was given to the team, led by Dr. Pedro Irazoqui, with other team members including Drs. Muhammad Alam, Mark Lundstorm, Chi Hwan Lee, Hyowon Lee, Zhongming Liu, Ramses Martinez, Terry Powley, Jenna Rickus, Paul Robinson. The award was in recognition of the team’s innovative work on implantable networks of wireless nodes.

  10. (03/07/2017) Dr. Liu gave an invited lecture in the Department of Biological Sciences at Purdue University.

  11. (12/21/2016) Steve Oleson joined the Lab as a new graduate student in Biomedical Engineering at Purdue.

  12. (11/28/2016) Dr. Liu gave an invited talk in the School of Psychological Sciences at Purdue University.

  13. (10/31/2016) Dr. Liu was recognized with a “Seed for Success Award”, together with Drs. Pedro Irazoqui, Terry Powley, Paul Robinson, Jenna Rickus, and Matt Wald, for a DARPA-funded project, entitled “Suppressing inflammation via neuromodulation of the GI tract”. 

  14. (09/28/2016) The Lab received funding from the NIH SPARC program. Dr. Terry Powley is the PI of the project, while the Lab is responsible for using MRI to assess how the vagus nerve stimulation affects gastric and brain functions.

  15. (09/20/2016) Dr. Liu gave an invited talk for Purdue Bioinformatics Lecture Series.

  16. (08/26/2016) Dr. Liu gave invited talks in the Institute of Engineering in Medicine and the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research at the University of Minnesota at Twin Cities.

  17. (08/14/2016) Lauren Marussich, an MD/PhD student in the lab, was recognized as the only winner of the 2016 Fearnot-Laufman-Greatbatch Prize, for the most outstanding summer seminar presentation in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University. Congratulations, Lauren.

  18. (08/12/2016) Kun-Han Lu, a PhD student in the lab, elucidated the sources that drive reliable brain activity when a person is watching a commercial film, in an article published in PLoS ONE.

  19. (07/30/2016) The lab contributed to a collaborative project (PI: Prof. Preeti Sivasankar) funded by NIDCD/NIH as a five-year R01 project. The goal of the project is to investigate the pathobiology and biomechanics of vocal fold dehydration. 

  20. (06/03/2016) An article, entitled “Research yielding insights into brain’s signaling network”, appeared on Purdue News, featuring the Lab’s research finding on the neural contribution to global resting fMRI signal. 

  21. (05/20/2016) Junxing Shi, a graduate student in the lab, received the Travel Award from the Organization of Human Brain Mapping in recognition of his top rated abstract, entitled “Mapping neural representations of hierarchical visual features during natural movie stimuli”. Congratulations!

  22. (05/15/2016) Lauren Marussich, an MD/PhD student in the lab, received a highly competitive fellowship from Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI). Congratulations, Lauren.

  23. (04/21/2016) Haiguang Wen, a PhD student in the lab, published an original research article on the Journal of Neuroscience. In this article, entitled “Broadband Electrophysiological Dynamics contribute to Global Resting-State fMRI Signal”, he used his recently developed signal processing technique to disentangle and cross-link complex neural and hemodynamic dynamics over large-scale brain networks.

  24. (04/19/2016) Lauren Marussich and Junxing Shi, received Travel Awards from Purdue Graduate Student Government. Lauren and Junxing will both present their latest research on white-matter fMRI and natural-vision fMRI, respectively, in the upcoming Human Brain Mapping Conference at Geneva. Congratulations!

  25. (04/15/2016) Dr. Liu joined the editorial board of IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering (TBME) as an Associate Editor for the journal. TBME is a premier journal in the field of biomedical engineering. Papers published on TBME range from engineering development in methods and techniques with biomedical applications to experimental and clinical investigations with engineering contributions. 

  26. (3/25/2016) Dr. Liu gave an invited talk at the annual meeting for Indianapolis Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience.

  27. (03/04/2016) Haiguang Wen, a PhD student in the Lab, received the Merit Abstract Award from the Organization of Human Brain Mapping and the Student Travel Award from the Integrative Neuroscience Center for his novel research in brain decoding. He will be presenting his research both as oral and poster presentations at the upcoming Human Brain Mapping Conference at Geneva.

  28. (02/01/2016) An article “Fingerprinting the brain” in the latest edition of Discovery, Innovation@Purdue Engineering, highlighted the Lab’s research in brain imaging and decoding. This article is also featured by Purdue Today. 

  29. (01/05/2016) Jung-Hoon Kim joined the lab as a Ph.D. student in Biomedical Engineering. Prior to joining LIBI, Jung-Hoon received his master and bachelor degrees in Biomedical Engineering from Hanyang University and also did predoctoral research in Seoul National University in South Korea.

  30. (11/09/2015) Dr. Liu was among the recipients of the Seed for Success awards at Purdue University in recognition of the lab’s excellence in research and success in federal funding.

  31. (09/30/2015) The Lab received funding from Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to support the development of contrast agent MRI methods to assess inflammatory processes under neuromodulation.

  32. (09/15/2015) Kun-Han passed the Ph.D. qualifying exam in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue.

  33. (08/28/2015) The Lab received funding from Purdue Research Foundation (PRF) to support an exploratory study of mouse brain connectivity by using functional, diffusion and susceptibility MRI.

  34. (08/20/2015) Ranajay Mandal, Jiayue Cao, Yizhen Zhang joined the lab as graduate students. Prior to joining LIBI, Ranajay received a master degree in electrical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharag, India; Jiayue received a master degree in biomedical engineering from Zhejiang University, China; Yizhen received a bachelor degree in mathematics from Tsinghua University, China.

  35. (08/19/2015) Haiguang published an original article on Brain Topography. In this article, entitled “separating fractal and oscillatory components from the power spectrum of neurophysiological signals”, a novel signal processing technique was described and is expected to extract spectral signatures of neural signals. A Matlab implementation of this technique is available here

  36. (08/10/2015) The Lab received funding from Indiana CTSI. This grant will support the Lab’s use of 7T small-animal MRI to assess large-scale brain responses to target neuromodulation.

  37. (06/14/2015) The Lab traveled to Hawaii to attend the Annual Meeting of Human Brain Mapping (HBM). Lauren presented her work on functional networks during a natural vision task, sponsored in part by Geddes Memorial Scholarship. Kun-Han attended the Workshop on Human Connectome Project prior to the HBM conference.

  38. (06/05/2015) The Lab traveled to Toronto, Canada to attend the Scientific Meeting of International Society of Magnetic Resonance for Medicine (ISMRM). Jun Young presented his work on independent component analysis and k-means clustering for resting state networks. Haiguang presented his work on the neurophysiological origins of global and regional resting state fMRI signals. Haiguang’s work was highlighted during both oral and poster sessions in the meeting.

  39. (05/30/2015) Three undergraduate researchers in the Lab have graduated. Marcus Hosler graduated with a bachelor degree in Biomedical Engineering. Junxing Shi graduated with a dual bachelor degree in Biomedical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering. Rodrigo Castellanos graduated with a bachelor degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Junxing will remain in the Lab as a graduate student in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

  40. (05/27/2015) The Lab joined the collaborative efforts to build a Digital Human for Drug Development (DHD2). This project is led by Dr. Kinam Park, Showalter Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering. Other contributors to DHD2 also include Prof. Tonglei Li from Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy and Prof. Bumsoo Han from the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue.

  41. (04/28/2015) Dr. Liu visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), together with Dr. Nan Kong and Corey Linkel. The visit aimed to further strengthen the collaboration between SJTU and Purdue in terms of biomedical engineering undergraduate education. Following this visit, Dr. Liu also visited the College of Biomedical Engineering at Zhejiang University, China.

  42. (04/21/2015) Dr. Liu gave an invited seminar on multimodal neuroimaging at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign.

  43. (04/16/2015) As part of a faculty group from the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Dr. Liu visited National Institute of Drug Abuse and gave a talk on the Lab’s imaging research.

  44. (03/05/2015) Dr. Liu gave an invited seminar at the Neuroscience Center of Indiana University, School of Medicine at Indianapolis.

  45. (11/16/2014) Dr. Liu was announced as one of the eight national recipients of Biobehavioral Research Awards for Innovative New Scientists in 2014. This award was administrated as a five-year R01 award from National Institute of Mental Health to support the Lab’s research in mapping brain activity and connectivity by combining functional, diffusion, and susceptibility MRI and electroencephalography (EEG) and electrocorticography (ECoG).

  46. (10/25/2014) Dr. Liu gave an invited talk on neural engineering during the Annual Meeting of Biomedical Engineering Society at San Antonio.

  47. (10/9/2014) Dr. Liu delivered an invited seminar in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign.

  48. (09/11/2014) Haiguang presented his work, entitled “functional networks observed with scale-free and oscillatory cortical activity”, in the Resting State Brain Connectivity Conference at MIT, Boston.

  49. (08/20/2014) Lauren Marussich and Kun-Han Lu joined the Lab as MD/PhD and PhD students, respectively. Prior to joining the Lab, Lauren received a bachelor degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Miami, and finished a two-year MD training in Indiana University, School of Medicine; Kun-Han (Tom) received a master degree in electrical engineering from the National University of Taiwan.

  50. (05/04/2014) Dr. Shao-Chin Hung joined the Lab for a one-year postdoctoral training.

  51. (03/11/2014) Dr. Liu delivered an invited talk at the 2nd Whistler Workshop on Brain Functional Organization, Connectivity and Behavior.

  52. (03/05/2014) Dr. Liu delivered an invited seminar in the Clinical Center of Indiana University, School of Medicine at Indianapolis.

  53. (03/03/2014) Dr. Liu delivered an invited seminar in the Department of Psychology at Purdue.

  54. (02/14/2014) Dr. Liu delivered an invited seminar in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington.

  55. (08/12/2013) The LIBI Lab was founded by Dr. Zhongming Liu. Dr. Liu was brought to Purdue through the Integrated Imaging cluster, a university-level faculty search. The initial members of LIBI also included Haiguang Wen and Jun Young Jeong, who were pursuing PhD and Master degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, respectively.
