It has been announced this week that a revamped World Team Cup will take place in Australia in the first week of January from 2020.
It comes after the ITF unveiled plans for a rival 18-team end-of-season event to crown the Davis Cup champions from 2019.
The World Team Cup will take place in partnership with Tennis Australia and will feature 24 teams, offering £11.35million in prize money. Ranking points will also be available.
On the change in schedule, Federer said: "I think what tennis needs to do and look at is probably something that works also against other sports, not just the internal battles that we always face with politics on the inside of our sport, maybe think more what's good for our sport to rival big events.
