Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz earned the FedEx Air Player of the Year award, the NFL announced Saturday.
Wentz beat out Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith for the honor, which is a culmination of weekly awards fans vote on. Rams running back Todd Gurley won the FedEx Ground Player of the Year award.
Wentz suffered a season-ending ACL tear during a win over the Rams on Dec. 10, but he set a franchise record with 33 touchdown passes and helped vault the Eagles toward the top seed in the NFC before limping off the field in Los Angeles. Here's what the NFL release said about Wentz:
"Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz's 33 touchdown passes were the second-most in the NFL despite missing the final three games of the season due to injury. Wentz threw for 3,296 yards and had the league's fourth best passer rating at 101.9. A 2018 Pro Bowl selection, Wentz led the Eagles to a 13-3 record and the NFC's number one seed in the playoffs."
The Eagles continued their success after quarterback Nick Foles replaced Wentz in the lineup, and they'll play the New England Patriots on Sunday in Super Bowl 52.
Saturday night, the league will announced more awards at the NFL Honors show in Minneapolis. The winners of the MVP, Coach of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Rookies of the Year will be unveiled, as will the 2018 inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
