Championship leader Lewis Hamilton will begin Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix in pole after topping qualifying in Suzuka.
The Mercedes driver, who currently leads rival Sebastian Vettel by 34 points, broke the track record in Q2 before repeating the feat twice in Q3 on Saturday, eventually finishing in 1min 27.319secs.
Hamilton's team-mate Valterri Bottas posted the second fastest time, but a five-place grid penalty means Vettel will line up on the front row. Earlier in the dramatic session in Suzuka Romain Grosjean crashed out, prompting a red flag.
