Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has hailed current Reds star Mohamed Salah as having the best-ever debut season with a Premier League club and believes he knows the secret behind the Egyptian ace’s success.
Salah’s sensational four-goal blitz in the 5-0 thrashing of Watford on Saturday took his scoring total for the campaign to an incredible 36 in 41 games – 28 of which have come in league matches.
He therefore needs just four more goals to break the all-time Premier League scoring record for a 38-game season which is currently a three-way tie between Alan Shearer (Blackburn Rovers) 1995/96; Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United) 2007/08 and Liverpool’s own Luis Suarez in 2013/14.

Salah previously played in England with Chelsea between 2013-15, but Lawrenson believes he is a different proposition now and believes much of that is down to what he believes is an often overlooked element of the 25-year-old’s game.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, he said: “Do we know anybody who has come to play in the Premier League and had such a fantastic first season as Mohamed Salah? Or as good?
“I’ll tell you something about him, people don’t realise how strong he is. For a small-ish guy, upper body and his balance is sensational.
“We’ve had [Ruud] Van Nistelrooy, [Fernando] Torres, etc, other strikers, [Dimitar] Berbatov. But this fella plays on the right of a three. It’s unbelievable. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
