Nursing moms now have their own private place to pump at Third Circuit Court in Detroit.
The court opened new lactation rooms last month. Each one has chairs, tables and access to a sink, and are part of the court's effort to ensure accessibility to all visitors, said Zenell Brown, executive court administrator.
Brown said the idea to create the rooms was sparked last fall during a Women Lawyers Association of Michigan event at Wayne State.
"It came to light that a lot of lawyers were in their cars expressing milk, driving between court houses," Brown said.
The new rooms are in the court's four locations: Frank Murphy Hall of Justice, Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, Friend of the Court in the Penobscot Building and Lincoln Hall of Justice.
They are accessible to anyone: jurors, lawyers, staff and members of the public. Women who want to use them need to go to the administration office in each building and ask for a key.
Court officials said in a news release that the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan is reaching out to other courts in the state to request suitable accommodations for lawyers who are breastfeeding. The Washtenaw County Trial Court recently added a room for nursing mothers, the release said.
There are various apps and websites that can help women find places to breastfeed or pump, including www.momspumphere.com.
