Purdue Aerospace District to Host New Hypersonic Testing Facility

A state-of-the-art hypersonic technology testing facility will be constructed in the Purdue Aerospace District adjacent to the Purdue University campus. The proposed facility will be a first of its kind in the United States, expected to support multiple test cells and laboratories for various companies.

The Hypersonic Ground Test Center, or HGTC, will be used to develop high-altitude and hybrid-electric engines to power the next generation of US military aircraft.

“We need to do more than match our peer competitors, we need to leapfrog them quickly,” said Mark J. Lewis of the Emerging Technology Institute, a nonpartisan think tank focused on technology critical to the future of national defense. “This facility will help us make that happen.”

About the HGTC

The HGTC facility will have two separate testing streams that handle 3.5-5.0 Mach range tests and tests in the 4.5-7.5 Mach range. Testing by multiple companies can be done on-site, and companies can lease the facilities for long-term contracts.

“The transformational technologies being developed and tested at Purdue will help America win the 21st century,” Senator Todd Young of Indiana said. “Not only will these ideas create the jobs of tomorrow, they will ensure that the American military remains the strongest and most advanced fighting force in the world.”

The development of HGTC is the result of a collaboration between the company NineTwelve and the Purdue Research Foundation (PRF). Purdue University and the PRF will fund the project.
