But augmented reality, which allows both visual and hands-on instruction from any setting, remains out of reach for most educators.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 373px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/uns\/images\/2020\/ramani-metaLO.jpg\" alt=\"ramani-meta\" width=\"363\" height=\"204\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MetaAR is a platform that allows educators to create their own augmented reality apps and collaborate with students remotely. (Purdue University image\/Convergence Design Lab)<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"FORMAT-BODY\">A team led by Purdue University has built an app platform called <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/cdesign\/wp\/meta-ar-app-an-authoring-platform-for-collaborative-augmented-reality-in-stem-classrooms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MetaAR<\/a>, enabling students and teachers to collaborate easily using augmented reality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"FORMAT-BODY\">\u201cAugmented reality is overlaying digital content onto the physical world,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/ME\/People\/ptProfile?resource_id=12331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Karthik Ramani<\/a>, Purdue\u2019s Donald W. Feddersen Distinguished Professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.purdue.edu\/ME\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mechanical Engineering<\/a>. \u201cIt can be delivered on many different devices, from a phone and a tablet, to a head-mounted display.\u00a0For example, you can hold your smartphone camera up to your living room and rearrange the furniture in 3D.\u00a0Or you can play a video game, and the characters show up on your kitchen table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramani believes augmented reality (AR) is still in its infancy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen many applications in entertainment and advertising, which basically show you some sort of action projected onto real-world settings,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cBut the key thing is for people to become part of the action.
