You will learn how to prepare for and win a 3MT competition.\u00a0\u00a0The workshop will be handled by <strong>Dr. Joanne Lax<\/strong>, Graduate Technical Communications and Professional Development Specialist, College of Engineering, Purdue University.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"3MT Help sheet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/gradschool\/ese\/documents\/simons-3mt-help-sheet.pdf\">Additional recommendations to boost your chances of winning are included here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We also encourage you to consider participating in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/gradschool\/professional-development\/competitions\/3mt\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graduate School\u2019s 3MT<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h2>Registration<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/GIRS2020\">Register here!<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Timeline<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>January 27, 2020-<a href=\"https:\/\/Engineering.Purdue.Edu\/abegsa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/3mt-pd-workshop.pdf\">3MT thesis workshop 11:30AM-12:30PM LILY<\/a> G401<\/li>\n<li>January 30, 2020\u2013\u00a0 Deadline for submission (Date subject to change.)<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0February 7, 2020- 3MT Competition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Guidelines<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted. No slide transitions, animations or &#8216;movement&#8217; of any description are allowed. The slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.<\/li>\n<li>No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.<\/li>\n<li>No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.<\/li>\n<li>Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.<\/li>\n<li>Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps, or songs).<\/li>\n<li>Presentations are to commence from the stage.<\/li>\n<li>Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through either movement or speech.<\/li>\n<li>The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Judging<\/h2>\n<p>Faculty, visiting professionals, and staff will serve as judges.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Communication style: was the thesis topic and its significance communicated in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience?<br \/>\n&#8211; Comprehension: did the presentation help the audience understand the research?<br \/>\n&#8211; Engagement: did the oration make the audience want to know more?<\/p>\n<h2>Awards<\/h2>\n<p>There will be one winner and one runner-up .
