Argonne National Lab Tour 2014

The Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is a multidisciplinary research facility located near Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. ANL was initally established in December 1942 under the pioneering nuclear research led by renounded physicist Enrico Fermi. Today, ANL is a leader in both the basic sciences and applied engineering, encompassing fields of biology, high-energy physics, computer science, energy resources, environmental management, and national security. Research conducted at ANL is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy in addition to various private sources. ANL also serves as the home to various world-class scientific user facilities, including the Advanced Photon Source (APS). The APS is a 1104 meter photon accelerator system that provides storage ring-generated x-ray beams for research in almost all scientific disciplines. This equipment, the largest photon-accelerator in the northern hemisphere, produces x-rays that enable discovery of new knowledge about structure and function for variousmaterials. Research that utilizes these high-energy x-rays benefit technology, economy, health, and our fundamental knowledge of such materials.

The Argonne National Laboratory Tour was organized by the Nanotechnology Student Advisory Council (NSAC) at Purdue University. NSAC is a multidisciplinary student interest organization that promotes collaboration, research awareness, and communication among faculty, staff, and students within nanotechnology research. Thank you to the 2014 NSAC committee for organizing a fun and memorable learning experience. Thank you to Julian Castillo and Manuel Ochoa for providing photos from this event.
