The University Visual Arts Committee recently visited the gallery of student artwork at Westwood to select pieces to add to the "Art in the Classroom" collection. The committee chose three color photographs, two by Deanna Doll and one by Amanda Winter.

"Harvested Pumpkin and Ornamental Corn" by Deanna Doll

Deanna Doll is a previous Student Purchase Award winner. The committee selected another color photograph of hers, entitled "Advertising Clutter," from an exhibit at Westwood during the fall semester of 2005. The new photographs, "Harvested Pumpkin" and "Harvested Ornamental Corn," are from a large social documentary photography project Doll recently completed for a documentary photography course. These photographs and others from the collection have appeared in a local newspaper in Doll's hometown, Sunman, Indiana. The photographs were taken on a pumpkin farm in Sunman that is owned by Doll's aunt and uncle. Besides pumpkins and corn, photographs from this projected included images of Doll's family working in the field.

"Tea Party" by Amanda Winter

Amanda Winter is a Photography major who has just completed her first year at Purdue. "Tea Party" was originally shot for a constructed color assignment with the intent to emphasize the color and form of the subject. Winter was so pleased with the result that she decided to turn the assignment into her final project. All of the photographs in the project depict the four cups against a black backdrop, with the cups positioned differently for each shot.

Winter was not the only one pleased with "Tea Party." The photograph was accepted into Westwood. Winter's first show - and chosen for a Student Purchase Award, her first award.

Originally from Pataskala, Ohio, near Columbus, Winter plans to return home for the summer. In Ohio, Winter works full-time at an import car dealership. By fall of 2006, she will be back at Purdue to continue her studies.
